Breaking news: The Cowboys recently released wide receiver is a target for the Carolina Panthers…

With quarterback Bryce Young at the centre, the Carolina Panthers needed to radically revamp their offence going into the summer.

Cowboys release receiver Michael Gallup – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Following its failure to sign any of the top wide receivers available in the NFL in free agency, Carolina is now focusing on a recently-arrived pass-catcher.

Despite not being able to acquire a top wide receiver in free agency, Carolina managed to pull a deal for Diontae Johnson this offseason with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Even though Johnson gives the Panthers receiving corps a major upgrade, there is still a great deal of work to be done.

Mike Williams, who was cut by the Los Angeles Chargers on Wednesday, was already set to visit Carolina.

A top wide receiver who recently became available is being added by the Panthers to keep their options open, as Williams is also scheduled to visit with the New York Jets.

Next week, Michael Gallup, a former wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys, will tour the Panthers’ facilities, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Like Williams, Gallup was released by his former team, therefore signing him would not go towards the NFL’s compensatory pick calculation.

Michael Gallup stats 2023: 57 receptions, 418 receiving yards, 12.3 yards per reception, 2 touchdowns, 19 first downs.

Only a few years ago, Gallup was Dallas’s rising star. In 14 games during his sophomore campaign, he amassed 1,107 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

Gallup caught 59 passes for 843 receiving yards in the 2020 campaign the year after. Nevertheless, in Week 17 of the 2021 season, he tore his ACL.

Only a few months after the knee injury, Dallas signed Gallup to a five-year, $62.5 million contract deal.

After the injury, he was never able to reach his previous level of performance, only managing 842 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns in his final 31 games.

Gallup would undoubtedly be less expensive to sign than Williams, especially when the Jets are involved.

Gallup, according to, rated 97th in catch rate (77.3 percent), 82nd in yards per route run (1.06), and 103rd in route win rate (39.8 percent) last season, indicating notable symptoms of decline.

The Panthers will select a wide receiver with one of their two second-round picks, even if Gallup signs.
