Sad news>Sadly, three City Royals stars critical injuries remains uncertain on the day of their return

LHP Jake Brentz (left hamstring strain).
Brentz is expected to return in early May after a successful first bullpen session on April 2. Manager Matt Quatraro predicted a total of 20-25 pitches.

“Everything has been going well,” Quatraro explained. “Anyone who knows Brentz knows it was supposed to be a light bullpen. So we truly hoped he could keep it that way. But all indications indicated that it went really well.”

The left-handed pitcher was diagnosed with a Grade 2 hamstring strain after experiencing a pull in his left leg during a Spring Training game against the Brewers on March 17. He will be out for six weeks and was added to the disabled list on March 28, retroactive to March 25. (Last updated on April 2).

2B Michael Massey (lower-back tightness)
Expected return: early to mid April.

Massey was out for the final week of Cactus League games due to lower back stiffness, which had not subsided sufficiently for the Royals to feel comfortable putting him on the Opening Day roster. They want to go cautiously in the hopes that the problem does not persist and he can play in Kansas City for the most of the season.

Massey was placed on the 10-day injured list on Opening Day, retroactive to March 25. He’s still rehabbing in Arizona and has progressed to sim games and live BP to increase his at-bats and baseball activity. If all goes as planned, Massey is set to begin rehab the week of April 1.

RHP Carlos Hernández (right shoulder impingement)

Expected return: In early May, Hernandez was unable to throw due to shoulder soreness. He underwent a cortisone injection on February 27. The 27-year-old was able to start throwing bullpens again at the conclusion of camp, with his first one coming on March 22. He’s continuing his throwing regimen in Arizona and has a 25-pitch bullpen set for April 3. He will need to progress to live BP and a rehab assignment before returning to the big league roster, but the Royals want to have him in the bullpen by May. Hernández was placed on a 15-day IL on March 28, retroactive to March 25. Last Updated:
