Announcement: Cleveland Guardians top target agree to join..

In a late trade deadline move, the Cleveland Guardians secured veteran right-handed pitcher Alex Cobb

from the San Francisco Giants, aiming to enhance their starting rotation. Cobb, known for his previous

dominance with the Tampa Bay Rays, had a notable season in 2023, earning an All-Star selection after

making 28 starts, achieving a 3.87 ERA over 149 2/3 innings. Despite his impressive track record, the

36-year-old has yet to pitch in 2024 due to recovery from hip labrum surgery.

The decision to acquire Cobb comes after he impressed evaluators during his rehab appearances,

showcasing the competitive spirit that has defined his career. Guardians fans had hoped for more high-

profile additions to their pitching roster, such as Detroit’s Tarik Skubal or Jack Flaherty, but Cobb

represents a strategic low-risk, high-reward option that aligns with the team’s longstanding approach.

As part of the trade, Cleveland will send left-handed pitching prospect Jacob Bresnahan, a 13th-round

pick from 2023, along with a player to be named later to complete the deal. Bresnahan has demonstrated

potential with a 2.70 ERA in 12 minor-league starts this season, making him a valuable asset.

Looking ahead, the Guardians plan for Cobb to make one more rehab start in the minors before officially

joining the rotation. This addition, along with the impending return of veteran Matthew Boyd from

injury, provides the Guardians with multiple options as they head into the final stretch of the regular

season. The organization remains hopeful that young starters like Triston McKenzie and Logan Allen can

also find their rhythm and contribute effectively.

With this move, the Guardians are reinforcing their pitching staff as they prepare for the challenges

ahead, setting their sights on a strong finish to the season.
