With youthful players maturing into genuine big league stars, the Baltimore Orioles are a strong favorite to win the World Series as well as the division. Luckily for them, this is probably the finest time in Mike Elias’ tenure for the team to upgrade seriously at the trade deadline. It appears Elias and the Orioles front office are getting ready to make big improvements to center field after missing two consecutive deadlines due to not going all in.
Over the weekend, Bob Nightengale of USA Today claimed that because of Cedric Mullins’s troubles, Baltimore is “on the lookout for a center fielder.” Furthermore, Colton Cowser, the backup choice, hasn’t been very reliable at the plate and would fit in better at one of the corner positions.
Although Mullins’s batting line is.189/.240/.323, it still makes up for it with his quickness and fielding. This season, Mullins has played in center field for 500 1/3 innings and has three outs over average and one defensive run saved.
But his 0.0 fWAR suggests that this season, his awful offensive has entirely overwhelmed his strong base running and fielding abilities. The Orioles don’t have to give up all hope on a cheap player they hold ownership over through 2025, particularly one who has 30 home runs and steals from a few previous seasons.
