Former MLB Infielder Mike Brumley Dies in Car Crash at Age 61

According to ABC News, former MLB infielder Mike Brumley passed away on Saturday night at the age of 61 in an automobile accident in Mississippi.

In his major league career, Brumley was a member of the Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, Houston Astors, Oakland Athletics, and Houston Astros. He played in the major leagues from 1987 to 1995. He also worked as a hitting teacher and coach for the Mariners, Cubs, Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers, and most recently, the Atlanta Braves from 2018 to 2022, when he was employed as a minor league coach and hitting instructor.

Austin Riley, a third baseman for the Braves, called Brumley one of the most important individuals in his life.

Following Sunday’s 8-6 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, Riley told reporters, “I got a text about 2:30 this morning and I have been up since.” “My dad is the first person who has been a role model for me in baseball, followed by Mike Brumley. There aren’t many other individuals who have done the same. I feel bad for his kids, his family, and everyone he had a close relationship with. Today is a very sad day. Sending prayers to his family. It’s a difficult pill to take.”

In the eighth inning of Sunday’s game, Riley honored his mentor by hitting a two-run home run that tied the score.
When the Braves were visiting the Baltimore Orioles this week, the 27-year-old claimed to have worked with Brumley as recently as this week.

Riley added, “I had regular conversations with him.” “Just mentally, it’s going to be difficult moving ahead. All I can do is rely more on God and pray more. He is in control of it.”

Brumley played in 295 major league games over his career, hitting.206 with 38 RBI and three home runs. Moreover, in 1983, he and Texas, which had pitchers Roger Clemens, Bruce Ruffin, and Calvin Schiraldi, won the College World Series.
