Done deal: Wigan Athletic made a signing behind close-door

After agreeing to take on a new position at Wigan Athletic as player-coach, former Liverpool goalkeeper Andy Lonergan has begun his career as a coach.

The 40-year-old will be joining the Latics for the 16th time in his 24-year professional career, during which he has made 402 appearances.

He has been listed as a player to cover for Sam Tickle and Tom Watson, although his primary role will be as goalkeeping coach for Wigan’s first team.

Calvin Ramsay, a talented Scottish player who signed a temporary contract with the Latics after Luke Chambers’ productive spell there earlier this year, will play with Lonergan this season. Ramsay is currently on loan from Liverpool. At the Brick Community Stadium, however, he will be accompanied by James Carragher, the son of Reds hero Jamie.

Following his appointment, Lonergan exclaimed to the club, “I’m absolutely buzzing to be here.” Shaun Maloney didn’t have to persuade me because of what I had heard about him both personally and as a manager.

“I had never met the gaffer before, but right away on our first encounter, I sensed that we would be a good fit.

This is my first position as a coach. I’ve completed numerous certifications.

and think I know a lot about goalkeeping, but the coach has showed a lot of faith in me to be the first year goalkeeper at this age.

It’s great to have that group as a starting group for myself since there are two outstanding young goalkeepers coming through. I want them to get going and support their everyday improvement.”
