Over the past few weeks, it has become widely known that the Rams were eager to have the Gambian return to Pride Park following a fruitful loan season. Adams, who had temporarily relocated to Derbyshire from the capital of Wales in January, went on to play in 17 League One games, assisting Paul Warne’s team in securing automatic promotion to the Championship.
The 28-year-old was named Man of the Match on the final day of the season when Derby United defeated already-relegated Carlisle United 2-0 to move into the English second division. The supporters’ chorus, “We want you to stay,” echoed around the home stadium.
Adams responded by implying that it’s “never a goodbye” and that he would love to rejoin the team this summer [comments via BBC Sport]:
“It’s never goodbye on my end,” he continued. I have no idea where I’ll be”.
It appears that the fans will get their wish. On Thursday afternoon, John Percy of The Telegraph disclosed that Derby County is nearing an agreement to acquire Adams from the Bluebirds on a permanent basis. The club will pay him somewhat less than £1 million to sign him. Darren Witcoop went on to say that Adams will finish his return to the team sometime next week and that the Rams will officially spend £900,000.
In addition, Witcoop has revealed that the team is still searching for a new midfield player to join the team, even though they are close to acquiring Adams and have already signed Kenzo Goudmijn from AZ Alkmaar and free agent Ben Osborn.
