Is it possible that the San Antonio Spurs’ biggest asset during the NBA Free Agency period has also been their biggest
vulnerability?
Let me clarify. Applause was warranted when Chris Paul, a free agent, signed with the New York Jets and Harrison Barnes
was traded for future first-round draft picks. It’s easy to forget, though, that the Silver and Black have been connected to a
number of All-Stars during the summer, including Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell, Lauri Markkanan, and Trae Young. At
this stage of their careers, all those players are more prolific than Paul or Barnes.
Though free agency is still ongoing, it’s crucial to remember that San Antonio hasn’t added another significant scorer as of
yet.
What the Spurs may have missed out on
Even though Devin Vassell scored around 20 points a night the previous season, the Spurs struggled to win 22 games out of
60 while welcoming Victor Wembanyama, a player of the future. In 2023–2024, San Antonio suffered from a dearth of
outstanding talent outside of Wemby. The Spurs haven’t recruited another potent scorer to complement Wemby with their
decision to sign Paul for a contract worth more than $11 million and acquire Barnes, who is expected to earn $18 million
next season.

and practices how to build and continue to hopefully play a long number of games for their long careers.”
Without a doubt, Barnes is a member of the Spurs’ elite off-season group, whether he plays one or two. It’s reasonable to ask,
though, if San Antonio has left any bigger moves on the table over the past few weeks, considering all the other big names
this team has been linked to at various moments over the offseason.
