Legendary NASCAR driver Cale Yarborough dies at 84

One of the most well-known figures in NASCAR racing history, legendary driver Cale Yarborough,

passed away on Sunday at the age of 84.

In addition to winning the Daytona 500 four times, Yarborough won three consecutive NASCAR

championships from 1976 to 1978.

He was the first to achieve that record, and Jimmie Johnson’s five consecutive championships from

2006 to 2010 were the only accomplishment to match the South Carolinian’s.

Yarborough’s five Southern 500 victories at his home track in Darlington, South Carolina, are among his

other career highlights.

With 83 victories, Yarborough and Johnson are tied for the most in NASCAR history.

Yarborough spent more than 40 years as a NASCAR competitor. After winning six races, he gave from

racing full-time in 1980, but he continued to compete in open-wheel racing.
