For two seasons, Spencer led the Gators’ defensive line and served as co-defensive coordinator.

Spencer was as the defensive line coach for the New York Giants for two seasons prior to joining the Florida staff in 2022. In the past, he has served as a coach at UMass, Penn State, Vanderbilt, and Bowling Green.

But this season, the Gators defence had a lot of problems. Florida’s defence came in at number 69 overall in the FBS rankings for 2023. The opponent was able to amass 382 total yards per game against the Gators.

The Gators defensive line struggled mightily to stop the run. At the end of the 2023 season, Florida’s run defence was ranked 11th in the SEC.

The Gators started the season with a record of 5-2, however after defeating South Carolina in Week 7, Florida lost their next game. Georgia dropped its last five games against Georgia, Arkansas, LSU, Missouri, and Florida State. During the season, the Gators defence allowed their opponent to score 39 points in four straight games, the longest scoring run in school history.

Florida’s defence gave up 701 yards to the LSU Tigers in their 52-35 loss in Week 11.

Disappointment resulted from the Florida defense’s inability to stop the Tigers’ offensive in the Gators’ final SEC game versus Missouri. The Gators led 31–30 with a minute left in the game, but Missouri scored on a fourth-and-17 to win it. only at LSU and Missouri Throughout the course of the game, the defence allowed 1,200 yards in total.

The Florida defence has been the subject of criticism the whole season, but after that game, something had to give.

Staff Changes

Despite his inability to make the necessary adjustments to the Gators defence, Spencer was successful in attracting new players. He helped Florida obtain two of the best defensive line prospects for 2023: Kelby Collins and TJ Searcy.

Napier has now made 11–14 in his two seasons as a player for Florida. It’s expected that the Gators staff will change a lot in the offseason. Napier decided to part ways with Sean Spencer and sacked backup coach Corey Raymond. Alongside Spencer, Raymond joined the Gators in 2022 and was an important recruiter for Florida.
