Former Red Sox player dies of apparent heart attack in Dominican Republic.

According to his sister Rina Lugo, who spoke to ESPN, former Major League Baseball shortstop Julio Lugo passed away on Monday morning in his home Dominican Republic after what appeared to be a heart attack.

Lugo was 45 and had spent 12 seasons in the top leagues. He was brought to a hospital in Santo Domingo, but upon arrival, ESPN Deportes reports that he was not able to be revived.

Lugo, a 24-year-old draft selection in the 43rd round, made his main league debut in 2000 with the Houston Astros. After being arrested for domestic abuse in 2003—for which he was ultimately found not guilty—he was freed by Houston and signed with Tampa Bay. In 2006, he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

That offseason, he inked a four-year, $36 million deal with the Boston Red Sox. Lugo played 147 games, stole 33 bases, and the Red Sox won the 2007 World Series despite having a poor rookie season at the plate (.237 batting average). During the four games that the Red Sox swept the Colorado Rockies, Lugo went 5-for-13 with three walks.

After being traded by Boston to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2009, he played his final two seasons with the Atlanta Braves and Baltimore Orioles, respectively. He gave up on the game forever.269 career hits and 198 stolen bases.

He was a player for the Leones del Escogido in the Dominican professional league during the MLB winter.
