Cubs’ Pedro Strop in car accident
Pedro Strop, the pitcher for the Chicago Cubs, was not hurt in a car accident that occurred in the Dominican Republic on Friday, according to officials.
Late on Wednesday, the 29-year-old lost control of his pickup vehicle and collided with a wall on a route southwest of Santo Domingo, the country’s capital.
The Associated Press was informed by Juan Mercado, general assistant manager of the Cibao Giants winter league squad, “that we’ve spoken with Pedro’s family, and they’ve told us he’s doing well and resting at home.”
It’s unclear what caused the crash. According to officials, Strop was travelling with a buddy named Yeudy Delgado, who was also unharmed.
Strop, who was acquired by the Cubs in a midseason trade in 2013, finished the 2013 season 2-4 with a 2.21 ERA and two saves. He is a six-year veteran who was dealt to the Cubs for pitcher Scott Feldman along with Jake Arrieta after playing for the Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles.
It was the third Dominican baseball player crash in less than a month.
The Texas Rangers prospect Ronald Guzman was a part of a tragic incident on Tuesday that claimed the life of a guy, 27, and involving Guzman. Oscar Taveras, a rookie outfielder for the St. Louis Cardinals, and his girlfriend perished in an accident on October 26. He was operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol content that exceeded the legal limit, according to the police.
With roughly 42 traffic-related deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, the Dominican Republic has the second-highest traffic-related death rate in the world. Several other players have perished in car collisions there during the past 20 years.
