The Kansas City Chiefs fired defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs just over a week after he was arrested for the second time this offseason, the organisation said on Monday. As per an ESPN story, Buggs, 27, is incarcerated pending charges of burglary and domestic violence arising from an alleged incident that occurred in Alabama earlier this month.
The Chiefs had not made any official statements regarding Buggs’ most recent arrest, which took place on June 16. Buggs “unlawfully” entered a woman’s apartment that morning, according to Tuscaloosa district court paperwork, and he allegedly dragged his child’s mother down the stairs with the “intent to commit a crime.” Less than a month had passed since Buggs surrendered himself in on misdemeanour charges related to suspected animal abuse.
Trey Robinson, Buggs’ agent, said at the time that his client was the target of a “subversive campaign” to compel the defensive lineman’s Tuscaloosa, Alabama, firm to close, according to ESPN.
Buggs, who was selected by the Chiefs in the sixth round of the 2019 draft out of Alabama, only became a member of the practice squad in January. He had not yet made an appearance in a Kansas City game since signing a new futures contract in February. The product of Louisiana started his NFL career as a reserve lineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers, playing in 29 games between 2019 and 2021. He was cut shortly before the previous season’s playoffs, having played 27 more games with the Detroit Lions in 2022–2023.
Not only is Buggs facing legal issues this offseason, but Rashee Rice, the wide receiver for the Chiefs, is still facing NFL penalties following a high-speed automobile incident in March that led to many criminal charges.
