Just after 8 a.m. yesterday, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, 33, who joined the Tractor Boys in 2011 and played 75 games for the squad, was taken into custody and interrogated by National Crime Agency (NCA) agents.

At the airport on September 2, Border Force agents discovered the 60 kg of cocaine in suitcases that had come from a flight from Bangkok.

The footballer, nicknamed JET, was arrested by officers at his home in Cardwell Road, Gourock, yesterday.

He was placed under arrest on remand and made an appearance in Carlisle Magistrates’ Court today.

The court placed Emmanuel-Thomas in prison with the order that he appear before Carlisle Crown Court on October 18. There was no entry of plea.

The 33-year-old striker is presently at Greenock Morton, a team in the Scottish Championship.

He left Arsenal in the Premier League to join Town.

In addition, he has played for PTT Rayong of Thailand, Bristol City, and Queens Park Rangers.

Following their arrests, two ladies, ages 28 and 32, appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court. Their appearance at Chelmsford Crown Court on October 1 was bailed.

“The NCA continues to work with partners like Border Force to target those involved in drug smuggling – that includes both the couriers and the organizers,” stated David Phillips, a senior investigating officer with the NCA.

“We would appeal to anyone who is approached to engage in any kind of smuggling to think very carefully about the likely consequences of their actions and the potentially life-changing risks they will be taking.”
