LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina take aim at Akron
LaNorris Sellers, the quarterback, is expected to play for South Carolina in Saturday’s nonconference game against Akron in Columbia, South Carolina.
With a sprained ankle, Sellers left last weekend’s 36-33 loss to LSU, then ranked 16th. According to Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer, the injury is not serious as of Tuesday.
“LaNorris assures me he’s good and will be ready to go,” Beamer continued.
After suffering an injury late in the second quarter against LSU, Sellers made one series comeback in the third quarter before ending the game.
He ran ten times for 88 yards and two scores and completed nine out of sixteen throws for 113 yards and one interception. The longest touchdown run by a quarterback in school history, it spanned 75 yards.
If Sellers is unable to participate, the Gamecocks (2-1) will probably turn to Robby Ashford. Against LSU, he completed 2-of-4 passes for 42 yards and ran 11 times for 24 yards.

Ben Finley recorded a career-high 4 touchdowns and 358 throwing yards. In losses to Rutgers and Ohio State in the season’s first two games, he had completed 191 yards of passing.
“I’m eager to watch Ben improve on his performances against Rutgers and Ohio State,” stated Joe Moorhead, the coach of Akron. “Made several wise choices, threw the ball accurately (both short and medium), and undoubtedly moved the ball down the field. It’s imperative that he keeps working on increasing his accuracy and quieting his feet in the pocket.”
Moorhead is no stranger to SEC land, having served as Mississippi State’s head coach from 2018 to 2019.
