What Ohio State football's defensive coaching overhaul means for 2022: Nathan Baird's observations - cleveland.com

From an objective standpoint, the Ohio State Buckeyes are doing fairly well. Through four weeks, the Buckeyes are 3-0 and have outscored opponents 157-20. It appears that Ohio State is still quite good defensively. Offensively, it doesn’t look like there is much to complain about. Naturally, there have been grievances over the circumstances surrounding Ohio State’s backup quarterback.

To date, four quarterbacks have taken snaps. However, when it comes to mop-up duty, Ryan Day and company should look to the future.

Devin Brown vs. Julian Sayin as the Ohio State Backup Quarterback

Will Howard is the unquestioned starter, as he should be. He has played 149 snaps in the first three games and leads the team with 795 yards and six touchdowns. He has been effective overall and completed the tasks at hand. There are really few concerns with his game right now.

Who takes charge when/if the game gets out of hand is the problem. In each of the wins over Akron, Western Michigan, and Marshall, Devin Brown was the first man off the bench.

Brown has taken 41 snaps in the three games and is unquestionably the QB2 behind Howard. Those 41 snaps were all in mop-up duty, so he was not expected to do too much. During that period, he has reported for seventy-seven yards in the air. He has four rushes on the ground for a net yardage of zero. Against Western Michigan, he was a perfect five-for-five with 57 yards. But on Saturday, he missed several opportunities and only managed to finish two of his six passes.

The Case for Devin Brown

It was logical to assume going into 2024 that Howard and Brown would be the true competitors at quarterback, assuming there was one. Howard was a veteran with actual starting experience and has enjoyed success. Among the four, Brown was the most familiar with the method and even saw playing time in 2023.

The problem with Brown was that his farewell performance left supporters with a foul taste in their mouths. It wasn’t all his fault, though. It was difficult to find an offensive player who performed well in that Cotton Bowl loss, healthy or not. Brown only played 17 snaps before his ankle ailment forced him to leave the game.

Brown has been Ohio State’s backup quarterback since the third year of the Day offence.

ever since the 2023 season started.

In the event of Howard’s demise, Brown would probably take over as the starting pitcher. Like Howard, he is a dual-threat quarterback, but Brown’s legs would probably be used more by Ohio State than his arm. He has only been accurate 57.1% of the time in his career. But he’s the designated next guy up at this time.

Is he supposed to be?
