Chicago Cubs’ Mathew Peters suspended for PEDs, will miss most of the season

Following testing, Mathew Peters was recently suspended for using oral turinabol. The right-handed 23-year-old

pitcher had been practicing for the season when the results for the performance-enhancing substance came back

positive, and he had signed a large bonus in 2022 following his 16.68 ERA.

In 2022, Peters inked a $125,000 contract with a bonus.

After being selected in the 12th round of the draft out of Indiana Institute of Technology, Peters signed a $125,000

deal with a bonus in 2022. He also made 14 bullpen appearances for the Arizona Complex League Cubs.

Three players, including Peters, were found to have used drugs while playing in the minor leagues. It appears that

the issue has been worsening as 15 players have received punishment only in the minor leagues, and right-hand

pitcher J.C. Mejia of the Milwaukee Brewers was recently suspended for 162 games in the major league program.

Following the discovery, some on X began to compare the substance’s use to the Olympics, with one user claiming

“Oral Tbol. It’s what the East Germans used to win track and field in the 1970s.”
