Dave Matthews Band’s saxophone player dies
Saxophonist and original Dave Matthews Band member LeRoi Moore passed away on Tuesday due to complications
from an ATV accident he had in June. 46 was his age. On June 30, Moore had an ATV crash on his farm close to
Charlottesville, Virginia. After being released from the hospital, he went back to his Los Angeles residence to start a
physical rehabilitation regimen, but on July 17, problems from the injury forced him to return.
The band called Moore’s passing “unexpected” in a statement posted on its official website. During the band’s
summer tour, Béla Fleck and Jeff Coffin, the saxophonist of the Flecktones, had been observing.
According to the AP, the Dave Matthews Band performed on Tuesday at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, with
Matthews dedicating the performance to Moore.
The Dave Matthews Band formed in 1991 in Charlottesville, according to their website, when vocalist-guitarist
Matthews hired Moore and drummer Carter Beauford — both skilled jazz musicians in the local Charlottesville music
scene — to assist put to tape some songs Matthews had written. Since then, the Dave Matthews Band has sold over 31
million copies in the United States, ranking them among the Top 100 best-selling musical bands of all time,
according to the RIAA.
