In a significant move, the Miami Hurricanes have announced the dismissal of head football coach
Manny Diaz after three seasons at the helm. The decision was made public on December 6, 2021, as the
university seeks to revitalize its football program.
President Julio Frenk expressed gratitude for Diaz’s contributions, stating, “We are grateful to Coach
Diaz for his many contributions to our campus community and for the strong leadership he exhibited
during his tenure.” Diaz leaves with a record of 21-15, leading the Hurricanes to bowl games in each
season.
Despite a promising finish to the 2021 season, which saw the team win five of its last six games, Diaz’s
job security had been under scrutiny for some time. The Hurricanes’ inconsistency, including losses to
rivals like Florida State and less favorable matchups, raised concerns among fans and officials alike.
In a tweet, Diaz shared his disappointment in the university’s decision and the process surrounding it.
Speculation regarding his departure grew following the recent dismissal of athletic director Blake James,
who played a key role in Diaz’s hiring.
As the program transitions, former Hurricanes player and current Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal is
poised to take over the role. This change marks another chapter in the Hurricanes’ quest for a return to
prominence, following an 18-year cycle of coaching changes and unmet expectations since their last ACC
championship.
The Miami Hurricanes look ahead to the Sun Bowl on December 31, where they will face Washington
