Norwich City boss issues update on first-team mainstay’s contract situation

Although Norwich City’s start to the Thorup era hasn’t been the easiest, it will be hoped that they can build on these

foundations as their recent results have improved.

Three of the last four Championship games, including the last two, have been won by the Canaries. They defeated

Derby County, 3-2, away from home, on the weekend after defeating Watford 4-1.

Angus Gunn has been in goal for all seven of the Championship games played thus far. In 144 games for the team, he

has 40 clean sheets to his name, but his long-term future is in doubt.

Thorup, the manager of Norwich City, has now been questioned about it.

The Dane stated that sporting director Ben Knapper is “on the case” with contracts, while he concentrates on

improving Gunn and his players, as reported by the Pink Un. Gunn, the Scotland international, appears to be among

them.

The leader of Norwich City stated:

We have good players in the group, and we need to make sure that we can continue developing them for a very long

time, especially the good players we have. I believe Ben is on the case, just as he is with some of the other guys as

well.

“These are constant conversations, and reaching a consensus requires multiple parties.” In football, that is how it

works, but we still need to stay aware of it.

A regular starting lineup

Although some supporters doubt Gunn’s skill, the 28-year-old has been a consistent starter in the starting lineup for

the last two seasons. He will soon reach 150 Norwich City appearances, and he has played in 31 Premier League

games.

It is evident that managers value him because he has managed to hold down a starting position under Thorup,

another new manager, and this is unlikely to alter anytime soon.

It will be interesting to see whether there is any progress on that front in the upcoming weeks and months, as the

Canaries boss’s remarks suggest that efforts are being made to lock him down to a new deal.

Other players not under contract

Not only Gunn is currently in the final year of his contract with Norwich City.

As such, sporting director Knapper may have a busy day ahead of him.

According to Transfermarkt, the contracts for Ashley Barnes, Onel Hernandez, Grant Hanley, George Long,

Christian Fassnacht, Jacob Sorernsen, Archie Mair, Tony Springett, Jaden Warner, and Jonathan Tomkinson expire

in the summer of 2022.

Time will tell who gets new contracts because many of those will believe they have careers to fight for.
