Former NRL Star Arrested After Alleged Foot Chase and Horrific Beating Incident in Sydney
A former NRL player was arrested on Saturday night following a brief foot chase with police in Sydney, after being involved in a shocking incident where he was reportedly beaten.
Arana Taumata, who once played for the Bulldogs and Penrith Panthers, was taken into custody around 10:30 p.m. after police approached him due to multiple outstanding warrants, according to reports.
The 35-year-old attempted to escape but was caught outside a pub in Sydney’s eastern suburbs after a short pursuit. During the incident, one 29-year-old police officer reportedly suffered a head injury and was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Taumata was also found to have been horribly beaten prior to the arrest. He now faces charges for four domestic violence warrants, along with charges of resisting and hindering a police officer.
He appeared in Parramatta court on Sunday, where he was denied bail and will remain in custody.
Warrants for Taumata’s arrest were issued in June. He was convicted in his absence of seven charges, including fraud, dealing with proceeds of crime, common assault, and intimidation, to which he pleaded not guilty. He is expected to appear in court later this week on those charges.
Taumata, who represented New Zealand Maori, made his NRL debut with the Canterbury Bulldogs in 2008.
