Heartbreaking: Def Leppard Longtime Member Involved in a Deadly Accident…

DEF LEPPARD’s Rick Allen Reflects on Life After Losing His Arm in 1984

In a recent interview on “The Greg Hill Show,” DEF LEPPARD drummer Rick Allen discussed the emotional

aftermath of losing his left arm in a car accident in 1984. Initially, he believed his drumming career was over. He

recounted feeling overwhelmed and wanting to disappear after realizing the severity of his injuries. However,

support from friends, particularly producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange, helped him focus on what he could still

achieve rather than what he had lost.

Reflecting on his return to drumming, Allen acknowledged the mental adjustment required to adapt his techniques.

He explained that the knowledge of how to play was still ingrained in him, allowing him to develop a unique style

that compensated for the loss of his arm.

Allen has also found purpose in inspiring others facing challenges, emphasizing the importance of self-acceptance

and personal growth. He highlighted the significance of not comparing oneself to others or to past versions of

oneself, which aided his recovery.

Following his accident, Allen had to relearn drumming with the help of custom equipment from Simmons. His

bandmates provided unwavering support, allowing him the time he needed to regain confidence and redefine his

playing style.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Allen has committed to helping veterans with PTSD, drawing from his own

experiences of adversity. He aims to foster a supportive community for those struggling with similar challenges,

sharing his journey of resilience and recovery.
