Cubs lose former sixth-round pick to the Rockies via waiver claim
Right-handed pitcher Jimmy Herget, initially picked up by the Chicago Cubs in September as part of their end-of-season roster adjustments, has been claimed off waivers by the Colorado Rockies. Herget, a former sixth-round draft pick from the University of South Florida, didn’t pitch in a major league game for the Cubs. Instead, he wrapped up the season with a 2.88 ERA in Triple-A, where he made four scoreless appearances for Iowa and split time across three different organizations.
Herget’s journey in MLB has been active—since being drafted by the Reds in 2015, he has played for five teams, including Cincinnati, Los Angeles, Texas, Atlanta, and Chicago. With no minor-league options remaining, the Cubs’ decision to part ways was logical. Now, he heads to Colorado to compete for a role with a Rockies bullpen that struggled last season, finishing last in ERA.
In a separate move, the Cubs recently claimed left-hander Rob Zastryzny off waivers from the Brewers. Zastryzny, who pitched in both Triple-A and the majors in 2024 with a 1.17 ERA in six relief appearances and three starts, adds much-needed left-handed depth to Chicago’s bullpen ahead of the offseason.
