Novak Djokovic, Serbia’s famed tennis star, has withdrawn from the Canadian Open. The 37-year-old is often recognised as the greatest player in men’s tennis history during the Open era, having won up to 24 Grand Slam titles.
According to the newest news, which was officially confirmed by the ATP in a release on their official website, the former world number one has decided not to compete in the Canadian Open. The ATP 1000 event will take place in Montreal from August 6 to 12, with some of the world’s top players competing to exhibit their talent and win the grand prize.
It is unclear why Djokovic made that decision while competing at the Paris Olympics, which will end on August 4. The Belgrade native has already advanced to the third round of the singles event in Paris, defeating former world number one Rafael Nadal of Spain in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) on Monday.
Djokovic has an impressive record at the Canadian Open, having won the trophy four times in his long career. His first victory in the competition came in 2007, when he upset former world number one Roger Federer of Switzerland in the final by scores of 7-6, 2-6, 7-6. Four years later, in 2011, the 24-time Grand Slam winner defended his title in Montreal, defeating American Mardy Fish 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
A year later, in 2012, Djokovic won the Canadian Open again, defeating France’s Richard Gasquet in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. His latest title in Montreal occurred in 2016, when he defeated Japan’s Kei Nishikori in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. Last year, Italy’s Jannik Sinner won the title after defeating Australia’s Alex de Minaur in straight sets with scores of 6-4, 6-1.
