The Dave Matthews Band visited the Saratoga Performing Arts Centre in Saratoga Springs, New York, on Saturday
night as part of their summer tour. When Sam Kininger, a former member of Lettuce and Soulive, and fellow
musician and DMB member Rashawn Ross stepped up and assisted on the night’s rendition of Under the Table and
Dreaming creator, “What Would You Say,” the July 6 performance took an unexpected turn.
The collaboration moment came after Busted Stuff’s “You Never Know” and just past the halfway point of the
concert. The whole selected number was performed by the combined ensemble of musicians once Kininger entered
the stage. Notably, Kininger last sat in with the renowned group in 2016, so adding another chapter to their shared
history, before his 2024 moment with the Dave Matthews Band.
DMB ended a 64-concert hiatus by performing the first “Rhyme & Reason” since Sept. 2, 2023, when Kininger
bowed off stage. The band continued with more well-known songs, such as “Don’t Drink the Water,” which had an
appropriate interpolation of “This Land is Your Land” that was played at the previous week’s Independence Day
celebration. They added “Baby Blue” and “Ants Marching” as the evening’s encore after closing the main frame with
“The Last Stop” for the first time in the band’s history.
