Former Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson believes Cincinnati is close to finalising a contract deal with Ja’Marr Chase.
Meanwhile, he believes the Bengals’ top playmaker will not play until a deal is finalised, regardless of whether the season begins soon. Chase has not practiced once throughout training camp because he is currently under contract into next season. Johnson discussed the topic with ESPN’s Adam Schefter on the Adam Schefter Podcast.
“He’s not touching the field,” Johnson stated in an interview with Schefter about the situation in which a trade is not completed. “Certain players can separate their love for the game from commerce; if it were me, I’d have been out there practicing deal or no deal, I don’t mind. But on the business side, Ja’Marr and his staff understand that this is the only way to close agreements.”
Johnson believes Joe Burrow will eventually put pressure on the Brown Family to make a deal and get his top target back on the pitch.
“Ja’Marr’s deal will be finalised, most likely this week,” Johnson told Schefter. “Because I’m sure Joe Burrow will get angry at some time if he doesn’t have his top receiver available. (Jermaine) Burton is good. (Tee) Higgins is good.
However, that offence is incomplete until you are aware of his presence. I’m disappointed that he hasn’t had a training camp since it’s different to practise alone, and while you can train 300 days a year, the other 65 are completely different. Being pushed, tugged, and pulled in an organised environment differs from practicing on your own. I don’t care how fit you are. I’d rather he be at camp, getting the work done, so he can hit the ground running when the season begins. But it is unfortunate.”
