Ex-Bears Defender Suspended 6 Games by NFL
Until training camp rolls around, Chicago Bears fans won’t have much to concentrate on, so it’s always interesting to
see how some of the team’s previous players are doing. Unfortunately, one former Chicago defence has found himself
in hot water according to the most recent ex-Bears headlines.
Bears News: Tashaun Gipson is suspended by the NFL for six games.
Tashaun Gipson Sr., a free agent and former Bears safety, was suspended for six games on July 2 for breaking the
NFL’s policy regarding performance-enhancing drugs, according to a report by ESPN source Adam Schefter on July 2.
It will be interesting to see if Gipson’s ban makes it more difficult for him to get a contract with an NFL team. The
33-year-old free agent, who played his first two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, will now have to wait until
Week 7 to play for whatever team he might sign with.
Gipson will be remembered by Bears supporters since he signed consecutive one-year contracts with the team in
2020 and 2021. During that time, he appeared in 28 games for Chicago, recording 81 solo tackles, 10 passes that
were broken up, four interceptions, two fumble recoveries, and one sack.
Gipson, who played in the NFL for 12 years, was a starting-caliber player and a former Pro Bowler. Despite not
having the same individual achievements as some of his colleagues, in 173 games played for five different teams, he
still managed 492 solo tackles, 33 interceptions, 68 passes defended, and three pick-6s.
Gipson’s suspension is a black mark on his career, but if he stays healthy, he should be fine. As the season
progresses, Super Bowl contenders are usually trying to bolster their rosters, so it wouldn’t be strange if some teams
tried to sign him to a cheap contract to aid in a postseason push when his suspension is done.
