Celtic midfielder Aaron Mooy announces retirement from football

Aaron Mooy, a midfielder for Celtic, has declared his immediate retirement from football.

The 32-year-old, who joined Celtic Park from Shanghai Port of China last summer, was a member of the team that

won the treble the previous season.

He played all four games and earned 57 caps for Australia, which advanced to the 2022 World Cup final-16 in Qatar

before falling to eventual winners Argentina.

He scored seven goals in 42 games across all competitions during his one season with Celtic, helping the team win

both domestic cups and the Scottish Premiership title.

“Even though I’m sad to be leaving the game, I just feel like the time is right for me,” he said on the club’s website.

Over the past 15 years, I have had the good fortune to have a wonderful career and have some amazing memories.

“I’m thrilled to have finished my career on such a high note for Celtic, and I want to express my gratitude to the

supporters for their tremendous support over the past year. It was an incredible season to be a part of.”

“I wish Brendan, the new manager, great success with the fantastic group of lads at the club, and I hope Celtic

continue to dominate the game.”

Before being signed by St. Mirren in 2010, when he made his professional debut, Mooy started his career at Bolton.

He was signed by Manchester City after four seasons back in Australia, but he never played in the team’s first team.

He played 65 games for Huddersfield during their two-year stint in the Premier League after the team was promoted

to the league in 2017.

Before relocating to China in 2020, Mooy played for Brighton for two seasons.

“Obviously we are disappointed that Aaron will be retiring, but it is something we absolutely respect,” Celtics

manager Brendan Rodgers stated.

He deserves to make this choice on his own terms because he has contributed significantly to the game for several

clubs and his nation.

“After making such a significant contribution to Celtic last season, I’m thrilled for Aaron that he has ended on a high

note. That, along with all of his other accomplishments, should be a true source of pride for him.”
