The 18-year-old’s outstanding debut season with Leeds has drawn interest from several Premier League and elite European teams.

Grey participated in 44 Championship games and an additional eight across all competitions as Leeds failed miserably to secure an instant return to the Premier League. Manager Daniel Farke’s hopes of a third trip to the top division of English football were dashed in a 1-0 play-off final loss to Southampton at Wembley.

The dynamic midfielder is highly regarded, as seen by reports on Saturday that Brentford was closing on a deal worth £40 million plus add-ons for Grey. However, less than 24 hours later, the move appears to be off due to a disagreement about payment arrangement.

The Athletic claims that Tottenham, one of the teams with a long-standing interest in Grey, has now moved in to attempt to negotiate a deal of their own.

Having already had a medical with Brentford, Grey is rumoured to have shifted his focus to heading to north London, and it now seems probable that he will sign a contract to join Ange Postecoglou.

After finishing in fifth place in the Premier League and earning a ticket in the Europa League, Tottenham will play in Europe again the following season. Postecoglou has made no secret of the need to add more talent to his side.

While promising teenage midfielder Lucas Bergvall has completed his move from Swedish club Djurgarden, Timo Werner has returned to the team on loan from RB Leipzig. Spurs are anticipated to try to move on a number of squad players, notably Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso.

Given their losses, Gray—who has already earned two caps for the England Under-21 team—should play a significant part in the upcoming campaign. Although he played right-back occasionally for Leeds last season, his natural position is central midfield.
