Guardians Should Consider Reunion With This Free Agent Pitcher
The Cleveland Guardians are unlikely to target top-tier starting pitchers like Blake Snell or Corbin Burnes this offseason, but they can still strengthen their rotation. One viable option is re-signing Cal Quantrill, who was a key part of their rotation from 2021 to 2023.
Recently non-tendered by the Colorado Rockies, Quantrill is now a free agent. After a solid 2024 season with a 4.98 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, and 93 ERA+, including respectable performances at Coors Field, he could help fill a critical spot for Cleveland. Despite trading Quantrill almost a year ago to open up roster space, the Guardians are familiar with him from his four seasons in Cleveland and would know what they’re getting both on and off the field.
During his time with the Guardians, Quantrill posted a 3.58 ERA and 1.250 WHIP, though his last season was marred by injuries that hindered his consistency. While he wouldn’t solve all of Cleveland’s pitching issues, Quantrill could be a reliable fourth or fifth starter if he stays healthy. A reunion makes sense as the Guardians seek depth in their rotation.
