Panthers name captains for the 2024 season.

In head coach Dave Canales’ first season here, the Panthers on Wednesday announced their 2024 captains, a combination of the past and present.

Quarterback Bryce Young, defensive tackle Derrick Brown, linebacker Shaq Thompson, and safety Sam Franklin Jr. were selected as captains based on a vote by teammates.

For the fifth season, Thompson has led the club as captain, and the first-round pick from 2015 has established himself as one of the team’s elder statesmen.

Brown and Franklin received their first-ever captaincy, while Young has served as one for the past two seasons.

After breaking the league record for defensive tackles (103), Brown was selected for the Pro Bowl the previous season and was awarded a long-term contract extension this offseason.

Currently on injured reserve due to a foot injury sustained during the preseason, Franklin is regarded as one of the league’s best special teams players and should return later in the season.

In addition to the four permanent captains, Canales said he also intended to have a weekly rotating captain.
