Derby County are set to use the loan market according to manager Paul Warne, who hopes to have three new faces in ahead of the season opener.
In their preseason match on Wednesday night, newly promoted League Two team Chesterfield
humiliated Derby County, losing 4-0.
It is true that the Rams rotated players on the team and gave them a lot of playing time. The outcome
still demonstrated that Warne’s team still has to improve before they can return to the Championship.
After the loss, Warne spoke with Leigh Curtis of the Derby Telegraph, saying he aims to bring in three
new players before his team plays its first game of the new campaign on Friday, August 9, at Blackburn
Rovers. After several permanent additions thus far, the main focus is on loans.
Here, we suggest three players in crucial positions that Derby County ought to think about loaning out.
Elkan Baggott
Early in the transfer window, reports out of Indonesia indicated that the Rams and Wycombe Wanderers
were interested in teenage center-back Baggott of Ipswich Town. If Warne converts that curiosity into an
official offer, it might well work to his advantage.
Derby County, who frequently alternate between a back three and a back four, may find the 21-year-old
to be a useful rotation option. He has matured well during his loan stints in previous seasons.
Baggott, an Indonesian national team player who was born in Bangkok, made 14 appearances for Bristol
Rovers in League One last season. He assisted on one goal and scored one himself, helping the Gas keep
four clean sheets. Baggott joined the team midway through the season. With an impressive height of 6
feet 5 inches, the young player is unlikely to play in the Premier League for the Tractor Boys; instead, a
stint in the Championship with Derby County could be advantageous for everybody involved.
Mason Burstow
The Rams are in need of a center-forward, a big guy up top who can wreck havoc on the opposition’s
defense, and Chelsea’s Burstow might be the answer, based on their three preseason games thus far.
Midway through the 20-year-old’s 2021/22 season, he left Charlton Athletic for Stamford Bridge and
returned to the Addicks on loan to finish the campaign. After that, the towering striker played for the
Blues for another season, mostly in the academy. However, in the 2023–2024 campaign, he made three
appearances for the first team before going on loan to Sunderland.
As a member of a front line that was frequently cycled, Burstow had 20 appearances for the Black Cats,
12 of which were starts. However, he only contributed one goal and one assist. His progress may now
require a sustained period of senior activity, which Warne’s team might be able to supply.
After 30 games for Chelsea’s U21s, he has 11 goals and 4 assists to his name. Now, he needs a platform to
establish himself. With Kayden Jackson, another recent addition, being more effective out wide and
Jerry Yates, a new arrival, more of a second striker, the former Charlton player might provide Derby
County a much-needed alternative in the final third.
Tyler Onyango
Warne expressed his desire to acquire three or four more midfield players to his roster in an interview
with Dominic Dietrich of BBC Radio Derby after Kenzo Goudmijn arrived. Since then, David Ozoh has
come on a season-long loan from Crystal Palace, and Ebou Adams has returned on a permanent
contract, so there might still be room for one or two more players in the middle of the park.
Onyango, a youthful midfielder from Everton who can play centrally and on defense or attack, would be
a wise choice for the Rams. Although the 21-year-old has played for the Toffees in the preseason, it
seems doubtful that he will make the starting squad anytime soon.
Five senior matches and 27 appearances overall for Everton for the former England U18 international
loan stints with Burton Albion and Forest Green Rovers allowed him to make appearances in League
One, however his time with the latter team was cut short by a hamstring injury.
After spending a season on the sidelines for Sean Dyche is team, Onyango is another player who has
reached the age where regular first team involvement is essential to his growth. It seems appropriate
that he should try himself in the second tier.
Due to expire in 2025, Derby County may want to move quickly if he shows promise in order to secure
his services permanently the following summer.
