Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day has shown a notable increase in emotional expression during
the early part of the 2024 season, a stark contrast to his demeanor last year. This change can largely be
attributed to his new role, as the responsibilities of play-calling have been transferred to offensive
coordinator Chip Kelly. With this adjustment, Day feels a newfound freedom to engage with his players
and show his true personality on the sidelines.
“Now I can just be myself and chase everybody around, and I’ve enjoyed doing that,” Day explained. He
emphasized that this energetic involvement aligns more closely with his typical behavior during
practices, where he often interacts with the defense and special teams. The shift in responsibilities has
allowed him to connect more with all aspects of the game, enhancing his overall coaching experience.
By stepping back from play-calling, Day has been able to focus on game management and
communication across all three phases of the game. “Not having to call the plays has certainly allowed
me the opportunity to be more involved in the game management,” he added, noting how this has
positively influenced his interactions with players.
The results have been impressive, with the Buckeyes dominating their opponents by an overwhelming
margin of 108-6 over their first two games. This early success reflects the team’s significant talent, which
many consider among the best in the nation this season.
After a bye week, the Buckeyes are set to face the Marshall Thundering Herd in their final non-
conference matchup of the season. As Day continues to embrace his new coaching dynamics, fans are
eager to see how his emotional investment will further enhance the team’s performance as the season
progresses.
