49ers lands ex-Falcons receiver in free agency
The 49ers from San Francisco are preparing for a Super Bowl run in 2024. John Lynch, the general
manager, has been working hard to maintain the team in championship form during the winter. Another
man that the team recently signed should provide them some depth at wide receiver come training
camp.
Frank Darby, a former wide receiver with the Falcons, is reportedly signing a one-year deal with the San
Francisco 49ers, per Adam Schefter.
All Darby needs to do is supply one additional body for the training camp. With Ricky Pearsall, Deebo
Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and Jauan Jennings, among others, the 49ers already have a full wide receiver
room.
Like current 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, Darby is an ASU alum, as noted by David Lombardi of
The Athletic.
There are two possible interpretations for this little piece of information. On the one hand, it might
imply that the 49ers are trying to retain Aiyuk by adding someone with a comparable background.
Conversely, it might imply that the 49ers are willing to sell Aiyuk and would prefer to have a backup
body available.
Darby’s signing, though, most certainly has nothing to do with Aiyuk’s trade status.
We continue to be intrigued by the potential.
Does the addition of Frank Darby suggest that the 49ers will trade WR Brandon Aiyuk?
One of the most prominent issues surrounding the San Francisco 49ers this summer has been Brandon
Aiyuk’s contract disagreement and subsequent trade request.
According to David Lombardi, the 49ers will need to make a matching move in order to adhere to the
league’s 90-man roster cap at this stage of the offseason, following the arrival of Frank Darby. Of course,
this raises the question of whether Darby’s signing indicates that the 49ers are getting ready to deal
Brandon Aiyuk.
