The Kansas City Chiefs won their third straight Super Bowl under Patrick Mahomes’ direction last season. However, compared to the offences we’ve been accustomed to in Kansas City, Andy Reid’s wasn’t quite as strong. Their score total of 15th was their lowest since 2014, the year before the Mahomes era started.
The resignation of Eric Bieniemy, the offensive coordinator who called plays for the Washington Commanders for a year, could be cited by some. However, he was not assigned to call plays at Kansas City, nor is he the one on the pitch making or not making plays.
Rather, a lot of people highlighted the Chiefs’ inconsistent wide receiver play as a major factor in why their excellent offence all of a sudden wasn’t as successful. Rashee Rice, a rookie, and Mecole Hardman returned after huge disappointments for players like Kadarius Toney and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who were supposed to be major contributors.
However, it is said that the Chiefs had the opportunity to expand their roster before the season even started by adding a well-known receiver.
The previous offseason, Adam Thielen desired to play with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Even though they didn’t win the Super Bowl again, the Kansas City Chiefs might have had a simpler time winning the Lombardi Trophy if they had signed a top wide receiver in free agency. After spending nine seasons with his hometown team, former Minnesota Vikings Pro Bowler Adam Thielen became a free agency. However, it soon became apparent that the two sides were unable to come to an agreement on a contract worth since other positions were more important.
After witnessing the local favourite, Thielen, sign a three-year, $25 million contract with the Carolina Panthers, the Vikings decided to get younger while preserving salary room by selecting Jordan Addison to replace Thielen.
However, Thielen claims that in order to pursue his first opportunity at a Super Bowl ring, he truly desired to play for the Kansas City Chiefs under Patrick Mahomes. While playing golf in his spare time during the off-season, the 33-year-old just made this revelation.
When the 6-foot-2 receiver entered free agency last season, some would have thought he was washed up, but the Panthers were keen to sign the two-time Pro Bowl receiver, and their efforts were rewarded.
Even if he didn’t contribute to the Panthers’ ability to win, Thielen still had his third career 1,000-yard season and his first since 2018. While Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice came close with 984 and 938 receiving yards respectively, the Chiefs didn’t even have a player who reached the 1,000-yard mark the previous season.
Whether or if the Chiefs would have signed Thielen was irrelevant in the end. They nevertheless succeeded in their objectives. However, maybe the Chiefs’ path to a championship would have been less rocky had the dependable veteran been available. We’ll never be aware of it.
