When the Chicago Bears rookie quarterback arrived at training camp, he thought that his growth from session to practice would be crucial.
Williams believes playing some preseason repetitions will assist with that process as early as Thursday’s Hall of Fame Game against the Houston Texans in Canton, Ohio.
On Tuesday, the team was due to disclose its starting lineup for that game. Williams was also waiting for that news on Monday.
“I would love to get out there and play,” Williams remarked. “It’s pretty awesome to be at Canton, but it’s the coach’s decision.”
He also stated that he believes there are “always more pros than cons” to young players like himself getting playing experience in the preseason.
“Reps are always paramount,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the rookie quarterback was his harshest critic during camp as he learnt Shane Waldron’s offence.
“It’s been great,” Williams added. “I’m always severe on mistakes. That’s the part of me that I believe drives everything.”
Waldron praised Williams’ “ability to play with the energy and emotion, but also if something goes wrong, or if something’s a little off right there, he’s looking you right in the eye.” He wants to know, ‘Hey, what’s the reason why things went wrong right there? How do I fix it? “How can I make it better?”
It’s been nearly nine months since the Heisman Trophy winner from USC played in a football game, but even as the No. 1 overall pick and face of the franchise, Williams doesn’t think his opinion on preseason playing carried much weight at this point in his young career.
