Dale Earnhardt Jr. recently expressed his thoughts on the appeals panel’s decision regarding NASCAR’s
disqualification of Sam Mayer following the Round of 12 race at Talladega. Mayer’s No. 1 Chevrolet was
disqualified after failing to meet post-race height requirements, specifically being too low at the rear.
Earnhardt pointed out that the bending of the rear clip on Mayer’s car was a result of several aggressive
bump drafting incidents that occurred during the race.
Earnhardt explained the situation in detail, stating, “The rear clip on the 1 was bent from a series of
aggressive bump drafting incidents Saturday. We had photo evidence of the kinks in the tubing in a
chassis that was previously certified along with body scans before and after the event.” He emphasized
the challenges of maintaining the car’s integrity during high-stakes racing. Despite their efforts to
illustrate the complexities of their situation, the JR Motorsports co-owner noted that the appeals panel
upheld NASCAR’s decision, indicating it aligned with the existing rule book.
Following the disqualification, Mayer’s race position took a significant hit. Initially finishing in 16th
place, he was reclassified to 38th, a setback that carries heavy consequences as the postseason narrows
the field from 12 to 8 drivers. This development left Mayer 13 points below the cutline as he heads into
the Round of 12 finale at the Charlotte Roval, putting immense pressure on him to perform well.
The 2024 season has been challenging for Mayer, who had previously finished third in the points
standings the year before. He has struggled with consistency this season, managing only one top 10
finish since July, alongside four finishes of 36th place or worse in a stretch of nine races. While he has
secured victories at Texas and Iowa, the overall performance has not matched expectations.
As the competition heats up, several drivers, including Chandler Smith, Austin Hill, and Cole Custer, are
currently above the cutline, with Mayer in a precarious position. Sammy Smith has already advanced to
the Round of 8 after his victory at Talladega. With the stakes high at the Charlotte Roval, Mayer will
need a strong performance to keep his championship hopes alive.
