Miami Heat’s Haywood Highsmith involved in car accident that injured others

According to the team, Miami Heat star Haywood Highsmith was hurt in a car accident on Wednesday night along with several other people.

Following Tuesday’s match at Miami’s Kaseya Centre versus the Orlando Magic, the 27-year-old athlete was involved in an accident.

The Miami Heat released a statement on Wednesday saying, “We have been informed that Highsmith was involved in a car accident heading home from last night’s game.”

The Miami Herald stated, citing two people briefed on the incident, that Highsmith was not hurt in the collision and that no one died. The event resulted with no arrests being made either.

Citing a senior law enforcement source, local radio reporter Andy Slater stated that Highsmith struck someone assisting another driver who was stranded in the middle of the road. The individual who was struck had a partial amputation of his leg and was in critical condition.

Which police department handled the accident’s response is unclear. According to Miami police, they did not handle the situation.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured parties,” the squad said in their statement. Due to “personal reasons,” Highsmith was declared unavailable for Wednesday’s game against the San Antonio Spurs.
