The $55 million veteran from the Cubs left after a dismal season, “fighting for his job.”
The Chicago Cubs are five games out of a National League Wild Card spot and look likely to miss the postseason for the fourth straight season.
That run shows how far the team has fallen from its best-ever World Series showing in 2016. The final member of the team is presently a Cubs player who is “fighting for their jobs” in the final month of the season, according to Zachary Rotman of FanSided.
“If this is Kyle Hendricks’ last gig in Chicago, boy, did he go out on a sour note,” says Rotman. “The 34-year-old’s future should have be determined because he will be eligible to sign free agency at the end of the season, but might a strong finish help him snag a deal somewhere?”
Since 2014, when he first entered the big leagues, Hendricks has pitched for the Cubs. In order to rejoin the team in 2020, he inked a four-year, $55.5 million contract; by many accounts, the last year of that agreement has been the worst of his career.
The 34-year-old has made 21 starts so far this season and has a 6.51 ERA while giving up runs. If he decides to return to the mound the next season, he may also be able to secure a new deal by persisting through a few stronger starts in the past month.
If Rotman continued, “if he pitches well in his final couple of starts to close out the season, there might be a rotation spot available for him somewhere, even if it’s not with the only MLB team he has ever known.”
It’s possible that a lot of teams are willing to place a wager that the veteran will return next season or pitch well in a different role. During the previous season, Hendricks had a solid 3.74 ERA in 24 starts. a clubhouse leader with championship-level expertise.
