Against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, infielder Jorge Mateo and outfielder Cedric Mullins of the Baltimore Orioles were
involved in an odd on-deck circle incident.
Mateo went down to grab something close to his feet as Mullins warmed up to enter the batter’s box, and the ball struck
Mateo in the back of the head.
Mateo had to exit the game regrettably and went through the concussion protocol. Mullins reported that Mateo looked well
when he was seen in the clubhouse kitchen.
“I was getting loose looking at the pitcher, and I did kind of like a circle stretch, just pretty normal stuff,” Mullins stated. “He
was right behind me – didn’t even see him.”
Brandon Hyde, manager of the Orioles, anticipated further information on Monday.
Hyde stated, “We’re just waiting to see.” “Get some more tests and see how he feels tomorrow.”
In his lone at-bat against the Rays, Mateo singled. Tampa Bay defeated Baltimore 4-3.
Mullins made a leaping catch at the wall to rob Jonny DeLuca. He was, however, 0 for 4 at the plate. This season, he has six
home runs, a.544 OPS, and is hitting.181.
Mateo is making contact.246 this season with three home runs.
