Even without Spencer Strider, this Braves rotation might be the best of my lifetime.
The three All-Stars in the group—Max Fried, Chris Sale, and Reynaldo Lopez—are its main players. That trio, along with a host of other promising arms, can compete head-to-head with any 1-2-3 in baseball.
The veteran at the rear of the rotation, Charlie Morton, could be replaced at the conclusion of the season if Spencer Schwellenbach keeps getting better. Huascar Ynoa is joining Ian Anderson and AJ Smith-Shawver, who are recovering from injuries, behind them.
On Tuesday, the former Braves star was assigned to start a rehab assignment with their Florida Complex League affiliate.
A few years back, many Braves supporters believed that Ynoa would be a mainstay at the top of Atlanta’s rotation for many years to come. Before having a bad outing against the Brewers, he was pitching at an All-Star level, and his tantrum caused a fractured hand. He would never be the same, but he missed a great deal of time.
Ynoa battled to put an end to that 2021 campaign, which carried over into 2022 until he was finally transferred to Gwinnett. He would eventually have Tommy John surgery, and this year in April, he made his comeback.
He pitched 4.0 innings of no-run ball in that maiden outing, giving up two hits, two strikeouts, and one walk. Despite failing to complete the second inning and giving up six earned runs, the second outing was not quite as clean. With only one run given up via a home run in 4.0 innings, Ynoa’s third start was far more similar to his first.
Sadly, after the start, he was shut down due to right elbow stress. Since then, Ynoa has not made an appearance before. Braves supporters should have realistic expectations because he hasn’t been as productive since his comeback.
