INJURY UPDATE: So sad as Kansas City Chiefs veteran suffered more serious injury than expected…

After the first few days of training camp, the Chiefs face an alarming problem as veteran safety Justin Reid hasn’t practiced because of an unexpected injury.

Although there was little worry on the first day, a new report from Kansas City’s Sports Radio 810’s Jason Anderson indicates the injury may be more serious than first believed. Reid might miss the whole preseason and possibly even part of the regular season, Anderson was informed.

Reid is the most seasoned player in the secondary and is taking on a bigger role as the team’s kickoff return specialist, so his probable loss is concerning.

In his two years with the team, Reid has shown himself to be extremely durable and consistent. With his tough, physical play and acute awareness of Steve Spagnuolo’s defence, Reid has helped set the defensive tone.

Reid has played in both of those seasons, recording 178 tackles, 14 deflected passes, four sacks, and an interception. Clearly, he is a key player to stay healthy. The Chiefs need players like Reid to step up and guide the younger players in the secondary after dealing away L’Jarius Sneed during the offseason.

What Justin Reid's injury means for the Chiefs secondary and future playing time

Reid’s likely loss for training camp and the preseason is difficult enough, but it might be expensive to be without him against the Bengals in Week 2 or the Ravens in Week 1. However, his absence does present an opportunity for someone like Bryan Cook, Nazeeh Johnson, or Chamarri Conner to develop as a leader.

Reid’s contract is expiring this year, and he wants to prove he deserves an extension. He is more valuable because of his versatility as a kicker, but it will be important to keep an eye on the injury going ahead.

Though this allegation is obviously alarming, the Chiefs hope Reid’s injury is not too serious. Injuries seem to be the only thing that can stop the squad from winning a historic third straight Lombardi Trophy. Reid has an obvious value, and the tale surrounding his situation is one to keep an eye on over the coming weeks.
