Next season, Coventry City and Plymouth Argyle will both be participating in championship football.
Under Wayne Rooney’s leadership, the Pilgrims managed to narrowly avoid being relegated back to League One. Although it is commonly predicted that they would struggle once more, their new manager will be eager to move them up the division.
In contrast, the Sky Blues were unable to secure a second consecutive play-off finish. But this time, Mark Robins and company ought to be well-prepared to compete for promotion to the Premier League.
Michael Cooper, the star of Plymouth Argyle, is reportedly coveted by Coventry City, who are hunting a new number one.
Reporter Alan Nixon claims that City is contemplating the 24-year-old in a post on his Patreon page. But Crystal Palace of the Premier League is also interested, and even though Cooper would probably have to fight for a starting position, the allure of the top level might be too much.
The recent graduate of Argyle Academy is in the final year of his contract and just declined a new offer. He might therefore be sold to the highest bidder before the upcoming season.
Ideal for Argyle?
It’s obvious that, in a perfect world, Cooper would sign a new contract with Plymouth Argyle.
It’s no secret that Cooper is a very gifted goalie; following a somewhat disrupted year due to injuries, there is strong support for him to return to form and reach new heights now that he is fully fit.
To cash in this summer, though, the Pilgrims would be better suited if he decides against signing a new deal. As the shot-stopper approaches the final year of his deal at Home Park, they may still fetch a respectable price for him.
It would be risky to turn down bids and hold Cooper through the end of the current summer. He might be crucial to Rooney’s goals, but losing a prized asset for nothing in 2025 would be devastating, so selling him might be the best course of action.
Palace or Coventry?
It wouldn’t be shocking if further teams were to pursue Plymouth Argyle custodian Cooper in addition to Coventry City and Crystal Palace. The two parties that are now pursuing them are interesting choices, though.
He would virtually certainly stay the best “keeper if he joined the Sky Blues. Brad Collins and Ben Wilson appear to be moving down the depth chart in favour of this summer’s signing, which is what Robins needs in between the sticks.
Cooper would face fierce competition for the starting position in a Selhurst Park transfer.
For the Eagles, Dean Henderson has been the dependable number one, and it would be difficult to unseat him in the near and long terms. The Plymouth Argyle star will undoubtedly consider that, but the opportunity to play in the Premier League might still be too alluring.
Prior to the upcoming season, Cooper will make sure to carefully consider his options.
