After the Canaries were soundly defeated 4-0 by Leeds United in the previous season’s play-off semifinal, former City head coach David Wagner was fired 24 hours after the final whistle amid harsh criticism of his playing philosophy.
“Having a distinct identity is more of a duty for a coach and a club. I believe the club’s identity should remain the same once I’m gone,” Thorup said to BBC Look East.
“I think its about building that clear identity which is maybe our most important job to do, and I hope that the fans can see that we are taking steps in the direction where it becomes more clear why we take these decisions.”
“On the ball, City” is a slogan in the club, Thorup continued, speaking of the identity he wished to establish at Carrow Road. It is our duty to field a squad that is composed entirely of technical and skilled players. We have control over games when we can conquer them.
Additionally, I believe that players with ties to the club or the city should be added. It’s crucial, in my opinion, that we relate that to how we play on the weekends.
Despite just having one victory in their first five league games, Norwich is now ranked 15th in the Championship standings, but the 35-year-old Dane believes the team is headed in the right direction.
“I believe the players are performing admirably. The players, in my opinion, are truly attempting to adjust and demonstrating that we have made significant progress.”
Thorup suffered a severe hit this summer as attacker Adam Idah, winger Jonathan Rowe, and star midfielder Gabriel Sara all left the team.
And last Saturday, despite having the majority of the possession, City lost 1-0 to the hosts after failing to penetrate a resolute Swansea City defence.
The head coach of City, though, seems unfazed by his team’s season opening performance.
“When you try to go down a new road and do something different compared to what you have done before then it takes time and there’s a lot of things to be done,” he stated.
The Canaries take on fifth-place Watford at home after lunch on Saturday to resume their league campaign.
