Nick Mashiter said that the Canaries had opted to call off their pursuit of the 22-year-old due to a suspected knee injury.
While the player passed his medical inspection, the Championship side was concerned about his future fitness.
Norwich decided to withdraw from the contest to recruit the Ligue 1 star due to the high cost of the deal, as they seek a replacement for Adam Idah.
According to Sky Sports, Idah joined Celtic permanently after a half-season loan spell last season, for a fee of £9.5 million, leaving Johannes Hoff Thorup’s team weak in attack.
Bertug Yildirim’s agent speaks out against Norwich City’s transfer decision.
Mirsad Turkcan, Yildirim’s agent, has openly questioned Norwich’s decision to withdraw from the contract to sign the forward, alleging the club attempted to lower the terms of the transfer before it was terminated.
He maintained that the player had passed his medical and stated that there was no underlying health problem.
“Norwich and Rennes reached an agreement for a total of [£6.8 million], and Bertuğ went to England for a health check,” stated Turkcan, via Sports Digital.
The Norwich team acknowledged that there is a “risk of injury” for Bertuğ, who passed his health exam. However, they were willing to take the chance for a lower cost.
“We were disturbed by the situation and returned to France without signing.”
“Bertuğ was part of our national team’s Euro 2024 squad and finished the pre-season camp in good health.” Bertuğ Yıldırım does not have any health issues as alleged.
Yildirim joined Rennes last season but has yet to score a goal in 21 games in the French top division (all statistics from Fbref).
Norwich City still sorely need a striker after Bertug Yildirim’s progress.
Norwich have Josh Sargent and Ashley Barnes as forward options for season, although there is concern about the American’s future at Carrow Road.
According to Give Me Sport, FC Cincinnati was interested in signing Sargent, but the move fell through when the MLS transfer window closed.
However, another party could enter the picture, and regardless of whether Sargent stays or leaves, Norwich will most likely need another striker to fill Idah’s spot in the squad.
If they believed Yildirim had a possible issue that would prohibit him from playing consistently, it’s no surprise that they backed out of the deal, and the player has little control over the situation.
Now, the attention must shift to bringing in competition for Sargent, and there is definitely money to do so considering the amount they were willing to spend on Yildirim.
