Norwich City and Russell Martin Part Ways with Mutual Agreement
Norwich City have mutually agreed to terminate the contract of defender Russell Martin. The 32-year-old centre-
back has made 309 appearances for the club since joining on loan from Peterborough United in 2009, and he
captained Norwich during their 2015 Championship play-off final victory over Middlesbrough.
However, in the past 18 months, Martin has seen his role diminished, with captain Grant Hanley, Timm Klose, and
Christoph Zimmermann all ahead of him in the center-back pecking order. He spent part of the previous season on
loan at Glasgow Rangers and feels it’s now time to pursue regular playing time elsewhere.
Martin, who trained with Norwich’s U23s during the summer, commented on his situation: “It’s been difficult for
me, being in this position. I’m a footballer, and I want to play. It’s not easy to just sit and collect wages. I’m desperate
to get back on the pitch and I appreciate that the club and I have agreed to part ways. It allows me the freedom to
find another club and continue playing; I still feel I’ve got a few years left in me.”
Reflecting on his time at Norwich, Martin said, “It hasn’t been easy to end my connection with the club. It’s a
decision I didn’t take lightly, but I respect how the club has handled it. I’ve been privileged to play here, and while
the past year wasn’t ideal, Norwich will always hold a special place in my heart.”
Norwich City expressed gratitude for Martin’s contributions both on and off the pitch, stating, “We thank Russell for
everything he has given to the club and wish him the best in his future endeavors. We’ll invite him back for a league
game in the future to honor him and give fans the chance to say goodbye.”
