Rams' Stetson Bennett sheds more light on mysterious absence that sidelined him for 2023 season | Fox News

In May, when he showed up at Rams practice, Stetson Bennett declined to discuss the specifics of his mysterious absence from the Los Angeles Rams during the previous season. However, he did provide some additional details about his time on the reserve/non-football injury list in an interview with the “Unreserved with TJ Callaway” podcast, stating that he was “home.”

“I went home for a minute. I kind of had to clear my head. I don’t know, it was a bunch of everything all at once it felt like,” Bennett said. “I just needed a little bit of a break.” Bennett had just won back-to-back national titles with the Bulldogs when he was arrested for public intoxication a few days later, and the Rams had selected him in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

When asked directly if the decision he made to step away from the game fell under the “umbrella of mental health,” Bennett responded in May that it was “great to get back to football, it’s what I love.” He also added that he had expected to eventually rejoin the team and made the decision after multiple conversations with Rams brass, acknowledging that it was difficult but “one we thought necessary at the time.” Bennett, 26, is once again vying for the backup role, this time alongside veteran signal-caller Jimmy Garoppolo, who was signed in March but will miss the first two games due to a suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

Bennett’s offensive coordinator, Mike LaFleur, stated in May, “I’m not going to get too much into specifics obviously, but he’s in a good place and he is out here. He’s come to work every single day focused with the intent of getting better and that’s all you can ask these guys. If their intent is right, which Stetson’s is right now, that’s all you can ask and it’s definitely showing.” Paulina Dedaj of Fox News contributed to this story.
