A spectator can be heard ridiculing Duran in a game broadcast video, claiming that he needs a tennis racquet to hit the baseball. Duran responded by turning around during his at-bat and shouting a derogatory slur at the heckler.

“Shut up, you f–king f—-t,” Duran yelled before resuming his posture for the following ball.

Following the Red Sox’s 10-2 loss, Duran apologised for uttering a “truly horrific word.” He also expressed great apologies for the situation and stated that he will utilise it as a learning opportunity.

“I feel awful knowing how many people I offended and disappointed,” Duran told NBC News. “I apologise to the whole Red Sox organisation and, more importantly, to the entire LGBTQ community. Our young followers are supposed to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I fell well short of that expectation.”

Duran, according to Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe, continues to lament the situation. On Monday, August 12, Pete tweeted on X (previously known as Twitter), claiming that Duran made his comment in the “heat of the moment.”

Despite this, the Red Sox and MLB issued Duran an unpaid two-game suspension for his offensive comments. In addition, his salary from the two-game suspension was donated to the Federation of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG).
