Cubs pitcher breaks hand after punching Wrigley Field wall

After departing Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, relief pitcher Colten Brewer of the Chicago Cubs struck a wall and broke his hand. As a result, the team placed Brewer on the injured list.

After giving up three runs in the third inning of the 7-0 loss, Brewer hit a wall at Wrigley Field, fracturing his non-pitching hand, and was obviously irritated.

Cubs prospect Hunter Bigge will take Brewer’s place on the 40-man roster after he was placed on the 60-day injured list.

After starting Kyle Hendricks left the game due to lower back discomfort, Brewer entered the game. With one out and a runner on base, Brewer made a throwing mistake that allowed catcher Logan O’Hoppe to score an RBI single.

After thereafter, Cubs catcher Tomas Nido made a throwing mistake that allowed O’Hoppe to score from an RBI single by Zach Neto. Having retired just two batters, Brewer was pulled from the game after hitting Nolan Schanuel with a pitch.

This season, Brewer has made 16 appearances with the Cubs, pitching 20.2 innings at a 5.66 ERA.

Bigge has made 13 appearances this season, mostly with Triple-A Iowa. In 13.2 innings pitched, he has struck out 22 batters and has an ERA of 1.32.

With the Iowa Cubs this season, he has only given up one earned run in 11.2 innings pitched.
