Red Sox shut down injured reliever after not ‘bouncing back’

Chris Martin on his journey to the Majors and return to Boston

Boston — Chris Martin (inflammation of his right elbow) was placed on the disabled list by the Red Sox on Friday.

“Yesterday, he engaged in catch.” At Fenway Park on Saturday, manager Alex Cora stated, “He didn’t feel great.”

Martin will return home for the All-Star break after being placed on the 15-day disabled list on July 5. At first, he was supposed to go on the Red Sox’s first road trip of the second half, which included three games in Los Angeles against the Dodgers and three in Colorado against the Rockies. Instead, he will take a plane back to Boston and return here following the break.

“No imaging,” Cora said. “But he just didn’t bounce back the way he wanted.”

Asked if there’s longterm concern, Cora said, “Not concern but it’s going to take longer than we expected.”
Due to worry, Martin missed 14 games during his 15-day IL from June 2–18. Earlier in the season, he also had to cope with a non-pitching arm injury to his left shoulder, which impacted his delivery.
The 38-year-old has made 26 appearances (26 ⅓ innings) this season with a 3.42 ERA, 29 strikeouts, and 2 walks. The description of his injury is “elbow inflammation.”
